90th Anniversary Flag Day Ceremony

Celebrate the Flag House’s 90th anniversary with our annual Flag Day ceremony. The museum will open at 10 AM for programming and host our flag raising ceremony at noon.

Flag Day Program:

10 AM – Flag House Opens for walk-in tours

11 AM – Fort McHenry Flag Talk with 30′ x 42′ Star-Spangled Banner Replica

12 PM – Annual Flag Raising Ceremony and Scholar Award Presentation

1:30 PM – Reading of Long May She Wave with author Kristen Fulton. Families are invited to join author Kristen Fulton for a reading of her new children’s book  Long May She Wave: The True Story of  Caroline Pickersgill and Her Star-Spangled Creation and dress in 19th-century garb in the Children’s Discovery Gallery.

2:30 PM – Historian K. A. Wisniewski unravels the story behind the design of the American flag.  This talk introduces the work of founding father, Francis Hopkinson, during the American Revolution and describes some interesting ties to Mary Pickersgill and to Baltimore. K.A. Wisniewski teaches the history of print media and graphic design in the Visual Arts Department at UMBC and also lectures on American History and the History of the Book at Stevenson University. He is the author of Making Faces (2016) and the editor of The Comedy of Dave Chappelle: Critical Essays (2009) and serves the Managing Editor of Roving Eye Press and the electronic journal Textshop Experiments. In the fall 2017, his critical edition of Francis Hopkinson’s A Pretty Story will be published.
